The motors are run by default when you start a flight. If you pull down you can start the automatic boot sequence by pressing Ctrl + E on your keyboard

By simply pressing joystick to one you know that the cockpit view inside (I, s) is then found and the contact, usually on the dashboard to see turn white forget. Flick the switch and hold it for a while. If this fails, repeat until it works.
